Sally Ride, first American woman in space dead at 61

Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, has lost her 17-month long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61 years old.

In 1983, Ride blasted off in the space shuttle Challenger and into the history books as the first American woman to go into space. At the time, Ride was a PhD. candidate, who answered an advertisement for astronauts.
